On the Chao Phraya River
The river is flooding but nevertheless we took a boat ride upriver to the outskirts of Bangkok. There are beautiful buildings along the river as well as some grand hotels like the Oriental and the Peninsula, but we could see areas the farther we got upriver that were seriously flooded. We stopped in a small town to try to explore a bit but once we got off the boat we realized the town was completely flooded. We managed to ford our way to a restaurant that was still operating and had lunch there. When we arrived at the restaurant there was still a bit of the path that was not under water. By the time we finished lunch everything was under water. By walking through the restaurant Jim managed to find a path that was not too bad and we jumped on the first boat south.
There was an article in the Bangkok Post this morning that said the government is still worried about Bangkok flooding and doing whatever it can to stop it. This is a real force of nature here so it’s unclear what will happen. Our neighborhood is pretty far from the river so don’t know if things will spread here. So far no more rain and hoping everything will be OK.
