Helloooo Vietnam!!!

Arrived in Saigon last night.

Vietnam!  “Going After Cacciato”…”Apocalypse Now”…marching in anti war demonstrations on the mall pushing Kym in her stroller.  It’s not just a country it’s a metaphor for my generation.  The ties are like a spider’s web, fragile, but tenacious.  We arrived at midnight last night.  There were huge crowds at the airport waiting.    I don’t know if it’s always like this or they were waiting for something special.  They had that air that spectators at the Academy Awards have, searching for someone important.  But maybe it was only a father, or a long awaited friend.

The air was like pomegranate, sticky and sweet.  Our hotel is like something out of the movie “Indochine.”  All crystal chandeliers and heavy damask draperies over filmy sheer curtains.    The furniture, all rosewood with louvered doors and heavy, tall rosewood doors.  I keep expecting Catherine Deneuve to come gliding by.
